Our causes

Angels for Africa

Angels for Africa was founded in 2005 following Sallie Butterfield’s visit to Kenya, as a volunteer with Adelaide based NGO World Youth International.  Since then a dedicated group of volunteers have worked together to create and/or sell a variety of handmade leadlight artwork (angels, tulips, birds, butterflies etc) raising funds to support various school related projects predominantly in the Kisumu region of Kenya. AFA’s aim is to improve the quality of education for children in some of the poorest communities in Kenya.

Eshikalame Primary School is a Public Primary School, located in a remote area near Mumias Town, in Kakamega County (north western Kenya).  The School currently has approximately 1150 students – 617 girls, 413 boys and 120 kindergarten children.  This school is currently their main focus and they have provided a tablet and IT training, treatment of a serious ‘jiggers’ outbreak and supply of 400 pairs of shoes and socks, underwear project (supply of 1500 pairs of knickers as girls were attending school without underwear), banana plantation project (income generating), supply of 4 treadle sewing machines plus training and fabric (washable menstrual pads), provision of second hand children’s story books and construction of a urinal.

They approached The Victoria League to raise additional funds to further address the sanitation issues.  The Victoria League has provided money to fund15 water units for drinking water, 20 large water containers for handwashing, a 7500l rainwater tank including guttering downpipes concrete tank stand and tap and also funds for a kindergarten toilet block.

Best Future Centre – Nakivale Refugee Centre

Best Future schools is the free and safe learning space for vulnerable (albinos and non-albinos) in Nakivale Refugee Settlement Uganda. Its mission is to provide equal education to all nationalities in Nakivale.  There are more than 350 children and 101 adults who learn from Best Future School.  We strongly believe that education is the most powerful weapon that we can use the change the world.

The Victoria League was approached by CEDAC an Adelaide organisation to help fund a Sewing, Design and Tailoring Program.  We donated money for the purchase of sewing machines, and all materials required to teach the Refugees how to sew.  This prepares the refugees for the work world with entrepreneurial skills for both employment and self-employment.  All the articles they made were sold which helps buy more materials and also helps the refugee.  They made clothes but also found a need for face masks.

Zomi Mothers Association – Churachandpur India

The Zomi Mothers Association have run an Orphanage “The Only Grace” for about 20 years and are also starting a Tailoring Training Course for Refugees.  Their mission is ‘to improve the social, economic and spiritual lives of different communities, particularly of the Zomis and tribals with a special emphasis on women and children’.  They approached us for a donation to start up the program to enable them to buy sewing machines and materials to enable the Refugees create livelihoods.

Redemption Medical Centre – Uganda

We have had a relationship with the Redemption Medical Centre for some years now but our latest endeavour was to build a Children’s Ward next to their current facilities.  The Children’s Ward will be a 10 bed facility used for children when they are sick or need surgery.  A parent/caregiver will also be able to stay with them whilst they are in hospital.  This project unfortunately has been stalled due to COVID lockdowns.
